(Azusa) – Diamond Ranch caught Covina in the fourth quarter and then outscored the Colts by seven in overtime to win 68-61 and capture the Azusa Tournament Championship Thursday night.
Covina led from the opening quarter quarter until late in the fourth when Diamond Ranch took a 55-54 lead. A Mike Peters three pont play put the Colts back up by two but a bucket by Ernest Ugoagu got the Panthers even.
Covina had the last shot in regulation but a Matt Hicks jumper came up short. Peters scored all 14 of Covina’s points in the fourth quarter and finished with a game high 35. Peters also scored all four of the Colts points in overtime but Diamond Ranch scored the first seven points of OT and won by seven.
Ugoagu scored six in the overtime session including a three pointer to open the quarter. Ugoagu led the Panthers with 21 while Nnadi Udengwu scored 20.
Peters led a 13-2 Covina run in the second quarter to propel the Colts to a ten point halftime lead. The senior point guard had 11 of Covina’s 24 points in the quarter. Blythe Curry hit a three and Elias Hernandez and Gage Phipps both scored four in the big second quarter.
Diamond Ranch battled back to hold Covina to just six points in the third to cut the lead to six at the end of three. Udengwu and Ugoagu then led the fourth quarter charge to get the Panthers even and then over ther top.
Ethan Jarrell was also big for DR with 12 points – all three point bombs. After Peters there was a significant drop off in scoring for Covina. Curry and Phipps each finished with eight while Hicks had six- all in the first half.
Diamond Ranch went 4-0 in the Tourney and improved to 7-2 overall. Covina went 3-1 at Azusa and fell to 6-3 on the season.
