(San Gabriel)- Tyler Shimamoto and Eli Peters lit up the the arena and led Gabrielino to a 76-73 win over Sunny Hills Thursday night in non league action.
The Eagles emerged from an early 12 point deficit to spark a 46 point energy burst across the second and third quarters that culminated in a huge 22-11 third. They had to withstand a frantic rally by Sunny Hills in the fourth quarter for a huge victory.
Sunny Hills (13-5) brought a 13-4 record into the game and was ranked fourth in CIFSS 2AA, 67th overall in the CIFSS, and 127th in all of California, in stark on-paper contrast to Gabrielino (11-5), who was 10-5 coming in, ranked 20th in 3AA, 198th in all CIFSS, and 447th in the state.
Shimamoto deposited a game high 30 points and dumped 22 of that in the second half to lead the Eagles, who also received a strong double-double out of Cameryn Matthews for 10 points and 15 rebounds. Matthews did a fine job in the paint in the first half and affixed eight of his points there.
Sophomore wing Eli Peters, turned in another stout stat line for the Tribe, putting in 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists, four blocks, and three steals. Four players (Max Thurman-16, Elijah Kim-13, Ryan Tan-12, Gary James-10) finished in double figures points, and another two ended one point shy of that club.
John Berkley scored nine along with Tim Ahn (who dished seven assists) for Sunny Hills. Thurman buried three from outside the arc in the opening stanza and led the Lancers with 16 points. Gary James had 10 points and nine boards.
