Mid-Valley Division Coach of The Year: Monrovia HC Ryan Maddox

Monrovia & HC Ryan Maddox have been number one for the last three years.

When Pat Riley was the coach of the “Showtime” Lakers he used to get overlooked when the “Coach of the Year” awards were handed out. The feeling was that with all that talent the Lakers were supposed to win, that all Riley had to do was roll out the balls.

That’s not happening here.

Before Ryan Maddox arrived five years ago Monrovia had never won a CIF championship. Now they have won three. This year after wrapping up their third consecutive title, the Wildcats also appeared in a state bowl game.

Yes the Wildcats have talent but Maddox and his staff coached them up, put them in the right places at the the right times and put them in a position to win the championship.

Last year, Maddox made the move at quarterback from George Frazier to Blake Heyworth, allowing Frazier to excel at his more natural linebacker spot and Heyworth to lead the offense. Ge Vontray Ainsworth came over this year and everybody knew he was a solid running back. That he was, but Maddox also helped Ainsworth to become one of the best defensive players on the team from his outside linebacker position. Maddox also helped develop guys like Darione Jones (977 yards rushing) and David Gallegos (42 tackles) into major contributors to the Wildcats success.

CIF brought in Alpha League powers Sierra Canyon and Paraclete to the Mid-Valley Division this year to contend with Monrovia and Maddox and the Wildcats dispatched them on consecutive weeks to capture the crown.

Ryan Maddox is the 2012 Mid-Valley Division Coach of the Year. It’s really not even close.
