This team was 5-3 when it missed its shot at beating Paramount in Week Eight… The 21-17 loss could have folded the Vikings season, but Williams, along with his coaching staff, was able to pull the team together and avoid a trap game loss to Dominguez in Week Nine. In Week Ten they got pushed by Lynwood and no one envisioned much beyond the second round.
One month, four weeks, later they were CIF champs.
It helped to have talent, but it also helped that Williams was willing to go with younger players. Sophomore Justin Huff (2,364 yards rushing), sophomore quarterback Jorge Reyna (1,567 yards passing/1,003 yards rushing) and a stud junior defender in Tristan Esparza (132 tackles/4 interceptions) were all key contributors in Downey’s title run.
For the Vikings it seems like only the beginning.
