St. Francis Gets Defensive in Win Over Notre Dame-Sherman Oaks

(La Canada) – The Golden Knights, to the roaring cheers and prompts of its increasingly popular and growing student section (The Dungeon), put in a stellar defensive and rebounding effort in a 43-31 win over Notre Dame – Sherman Oaks Monday night.

Notre Dame mustered only single digit points against in each of the first three quarters shooting only 20.6 percent from the floor as St. Francis moved out to a 39-24 margin.

The Golden Knights then held serve in the fourth quarter to beat Notre Dame in Mission League action inside the Father Alphonsus O’Connor Memorial Gymnasium.

Notre Dame did not have a player finish with more than five points.

Sophomore swingman Kyle Leufroy (4/4 free throws 5 rebounds with an assist and steal) led everyone with 15 points and two blocks for the Golden Knights, who added additional punch on each end posting and caroming from Markar Agakanian (8 points, 9 rebounds) and Evan Crawford (7 points) who contributed a team high 10 rebounds and four assists. Greg Lupica did fine as well, chipping in with five caroms, two steals, an assist, and a block.

SF (4-7 league) improved to 14-12 overall with this win, which guaranteed an above-.500 regular season finish. The Mission League finale is Wednesday, also home, versus Chaminade – 7:00pm).

The Golden Knights have been playing well of late against the league’s upper echelon, posting upset wins over defending CIF Southern Section and State champion Alemany, and Harvard-Westlake in its last outing, while losing close ones against Crespi and nationally-ranked Loyola.
