The TEN

(“The Ten” is not a top ten, but ten items worth being included in The TEN)

1.) The Texas Rangers have signed Derek Lowe to a minor league contract. In 16 seasons Lowe has appeared in 672 games, started 377, and completed only 10.

2.) Former Temple City quarterback Morgan Hatch turns 22 today. Hatch piloted the Rams to their last semifinal appearance in 2008.

3.) New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera will retire after the 2013 season.

4.) Former Monrovia wide receiver/kicker Mason Bryant turns 18 today. Bryant was part of three consecutive CIF championships for the Wildcats and will continue his studies at Penn this fall.

5.) On this day in 1971 Joe Frazier defeats Muhammad Ali in a 15 round unanimous decision. Ali went down in the 15th from a Frazier left hook, it was the first time Ali had ever been off his feet. He got up but Frazier took the decision at Madison Square Garden.

6.) Monrovia Wildcats (JR) defensive/offensive lineman Avonte Moore.

7.) The San Diego Chargers have released linebacker Takeo Spikes. Spikes, 36, has played 15 seasons in the NFL, 219 games, for five different NFL teams, and has never played in a post-season game.

8.) El Rancho (JR) wide receiver Javier Carillo’s 2012 stats: 43 catches, 658 yards, 2 Tds.

9.) St. Louis Cardinals name former outfielder Willie McGee Special Assistant to the General Manager.
