Bishop Amat Edges Agoura

By Corey Kwok

(Agoura) – Bishop Amat scored all of its four runs in a two out hit parade of five straight hits in the fourth inning and had to overcome five errors to beat Agoura 4-3 Saturday in the Redondo Tournament.

Preston Rosemont and Tyler Cohen singled in succession and Albee Weiss walked to load the bases with one out in the third for Agoura. Rosemont then escaped a blown squeeze unharmed and safely dodged his way to paydirt as the infielder attempting to tag him lost control of the ball. The throw home was also errant, short-hopping to the backstop.

Emilio Guglielmelli started with two shutout innings and was relieved after hitting an Agoura batter to load the bases with two outs that inning by Alan Rodriguez (W, 3.1 IP, 3K, 2BB, 1 hit) who issued a strikeout to pull the Lancers out of the jam without further damage. Rodriguez followed up with three shutout innings en route to picking up the win in relief.

Bryan Menendez (2-3, 2b, RBI) initiated the fourth inning surge by singling home Evan Claproth (1-3, 2b) to tie it at 1-1. Justin Gonzales (1-2) in turn doubled in Menendez to give Amat the lead for good, then Anthony Walters punched a decisive out-of-reach 2-RBI single through the 5-6 hole to plate Chris Moya and Justin Gonzales.

Eric Vega faced a stiff challenge in the seventh inning, yielding two hits to start followed by a pair of unearned runs off separate throwing errors, but got out of it to earn a save on a flyout to center and chopper to short.

Cohen finished 3 for 4 at bat with a run, while Rosemont was 2 for 2 with two walks and two runs. Agoura had its share of opportunities during the game, and left runners on third in innings 2, 3, and 5.

Amat:     000 400 0 – 4, 8, 5
Agoura: 001 000 2 – 3, 7, 2
