Jose Ledesma leads the Aztecs over La Puente

(Glendora) – Azusa broke a 13-13 tie with two touchdowns in the third quarter and went on to beat La Puente 27-20 Thursday night at Citrus College. With the victory the Aztecs improved to 5-0 in the Montview League and moved to two games in front of the Warriors who fell to 3-2. The Aztecs still have to contend with Bassett, who is also unbeaten at 4-0 heading into Friday night’s game at Ganesha.

Cameron Blackburn delivered the knockout blow in the third quarter stepping front of an Erick Morales pass and returning it down to the La Puente 25. Blackburn then busted off a run down to the two-yard line and three plays later Angel Maldonado punched it in to the endzone from one -yard out for a 27-13 Azusa lead.

***Blackburn had 17 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown. He also caught two passes for 27 yards to go along with the interception.

***Azusa quarterback Jose Ledesma completed 10 of 18 yards for 201 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a score.

***Carlos Montiel caught just three passes but racked up 118 yards including a 44-yard TD strike from Ledesma in the second quarter that gave Azusa a 13-7 lead.

***A 57-yard reception by Montiel set up a three-yard touchdown run by Blackburn early in the third to put the Aztecs up 20-13.

***La Puente quarterback Jacob Tovar was carted off the field and left in an ambulance with 7:09 left in the second quarter with a possible neck injury.

***La Puente got on the board first on a five-yard pass from Tovar to Julian Llantada with 9:23 left in the first quarter. The Warriors started the drive on the Aztec 39 after stopping Azusa on a fourth down fake punt.

***Henry Rodriguez booted two field goals for La Puente of 35 and 44 yards.

***Erick Morales replaced Tovar and completed 7 of 12 for 134 yards and the interception by Blackburn. Morales also scored on a three yard run in the fourth quarter for the last touchdown of the contest. Morales led the LP ground attack with 70 yards rushing.

***Blackburn picked up two key first downs in the fourth quarter that helped Azusa run out the clock.

***Jose Ochoa was La Puente’s leading receiver with four catches for 58 yards.

***Azusa (7-1) faces Sierra Vista next week while La Puente falls to 5-3 and will battle Workman at home.
