(Citrus College) – Terrell Watson had a typical Terrell Watson night. He rushed for 175 yards and three touchdowns to lead Azusa Pacific to a 38-28 win over Western Oregon Saturday night at Citrus College. Watson scored on runs of 36, 15 and 19 yards, all of them coming in the second half.
The Cougars led 10-0 after one and maintained that ten point lead the rest of the way. The closest Western Oregon got was 10-7 in the early in the second quarter but APU responded by scoring the next two touchdowns and was never really threatened.
The running attack wasn’t the only thing clicking for the Cougars. Dasmen Stewart completed 18 of 31 for 196 yards and a touchdown to balance out the attack. Azusa Pacific had 393 yards overall.
***Azusa Pacific got on the board quickly in the first quarter. The Cougars recovered a Western Oregon fumble on the opening kick off and then cashed in when Stewart hit Kyle Dravis for a five-yard touchdown with 11:47 left in the quarter.
***Lucas Gonsalves caught two touchdown passes for Western Oregon including a 22 yard toss from Ryan Bergman in the second quarter to cut the Cougar lead to 10-7.
***Watson showed off his speed early in the fourth quarter. Devin Wells intercepted Stewart and was racing down the field for an apparent score when Watson chased him down and made a touchdown saving tackle. Western Oregon ended up scoring a couple of plays later but Watson’s play was something to see.
***Tarik Myles was the Cougars’ leading receiver with eight catches for 98 yards.
***After Watson scored on a 12-yard run with 8:59 left in the contest to give APU a 38-21 lead, Western Oregon came right back with a 22 yard touchdown pass from Bergman to Robert Savoy with 6:50 left to get the Wolves back within ten.
***Western Oregon had the ball late in the game but Nick Grunsky intercepted Bergman and the Cougars ran out the clock.
***APU had almost twice as many yards as Western Oregon on the ground – 218-119.
***With victory Azusa Pacific improved to 7-2 overall and remained in control of the GNAC at 7-1. Western Oregon fell to 5-4 and 5-3 overall.
*** “I’m satisfied with the win but I wasn’t happy with the way we finished the game. We need to stay more focused and avoid mistakes” said APU Coach Victor Santa Cruz.
***With the 175 yard performance Watson has now rushed for 1461 on the year.
