Condors Claim Del Rio Lead

(Whittier) – Terris Jones conitnued to dominate the ground game as California High took command of the Del Rio League with a 35-17 victory over El Rancho Friday night at Whittier District Field.

Jones has led the rushing attack all season for the Condors (5-2, 2-0) and tonight was no exception, as he carried the ball 24 times for 278 yards and four touchdowns in the game against the Dons ((4-3, 1-1). Overall, the Condors had a total offense of 485 yards on the night.

The game was a see-saw battle in the first half as each Condor was answered with an El Rancho score. Jones’ 88 yard touchdown on Cal’s first possession was answered by Anthony Ayala’s 19-yard catch from Josh Perea to end the first quarter in a 7-7 tie.

The second quarter was the same as the first, Jones scored his second of the night, this time from 10 yards out and El Rancho answered late in the half with a 68 halfback option pass from Chris Castro to Freddy Garcia with 1:53 left in the half, ending the half in a 14-14 tie.

In the second half however, the Dons took the lead on the opening drive after recovering an onside kick to open the third quarter. Despite taking the ball at the Cal 38 yard line, they only moved the ball five yards but kicker Lenny :eyva split the uprights with a 50-yard field goal to give the Dons a 17-14 lead, which would end up being their last lead fo the night.

On the next series, Contreras engineered a 73 yard drive ending weith Jones’ third score of the night, this time for 18 yards with 2:50 left in the quarter. Jones would score again early in the fourth, this time from 31 yards, putting the lead seemingly out of reach, 28-17. However, Kevin Attanasio added a fifth score with 1:44 left in the game as he followed up a 44 yard run with a one-yard score to make the final score 35-17.

Cal travels to Pioneer High to take on the Titans while El Rancho hosts Santa Fe, with a possible shot at the top spot still in the mix for both the Dons and the Chiefs.
