Quick Strike Ike leads the Mats to victory at BG

(Bell Gardens)- “We weren’t meeting our responsibilities,” said San Gabriel coach Keith Jones of his team’s first half performance. “Each coach took their turn and discussed quite sternly with their position players that you guys need to step up and do your assignments.”

The Matador players heard their coaches loud and clear breaking loose in the second half to defeat Bell Gardens 49-28 Friday night.

The Mats scored first midway through the first quarter on a one-yard Arthur Brown touchdown that finished off a seven-play drive where San Gabriel encountered no third downs. A missed PAT had SG leading 6-0.

The Lancers responded with a 14-play drive that ended with Senior Daniel Vargas scoring from five-yards out, Lancers now leading 7-6.

BG’s Josh Adame on his own 23 was intercepted by SG’s Brown who took it down to the five to set up a Isaac Valdez touchdown pass to Alex Lopez which had them leading 12-7 after another missed PAT.

Again the Lancers retaliated with a long 11-play drive capped off with Adame’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Gabriel Viesca. Scott Williams caught the deuce that put BG up 15-12 with 4:35 left in the second quarter.

Both teams would score on their next drives, which made the score 21-19 in favor of Bell Gardens.

With a 1:04 left in the half SG’s Valdez orchestrated a picture perfect 2-minute drill that resulted with a second touchdown pass to Alex Lopez. The Mats led 27-21 at halftime.

BG’s scoring would end minutes into the third when the placed together a 12-play drive that was ended with a one-yard quarterback sneak by Adame. They led 28-27.

San Gabriel scored three consecutive touchdowns, two coming on the ground (credits to Brown and Fabian Amaro) and one by way of a 50-yard interception return by Lopez.
