Burroughs Knocks out Arcadia Late

(Arcadia) – For most of the night Burroughs had the snake down but couldn’t cut off its head. The Indians had their opponent on the ropes but couldn’t knock them out. Then finally in the fourth quarter they put a stake through their heart in the form of a Tyler Tilton 99 yard fumble return for a touchdown and Burroughs went on to a 35-25 win over Arcadia Friday night in Pacific League action.

For every Dalton Williams run, Arcadia answered with a Taylor Lagace reception. Burroughs would land a right hook and Arcadia would respond with a left jab and on and on it went- until the play.

Burroughs was leading 28-19 as the third quarter turned into the fourth as Arcadia began to march. The Apaches drove all the way down to Burroughs two yard line where they faced a fourth and goal. They had a first down at the five and had already been stopped on three consecutive plays when they decided to crank it up again.

Quarterback Garrett Tuck took the snap and rolled right on a bootleg. Having the option to run or pass, he put his head down and dashed for the end zone. But standing in his way was Charlie Hosea at the one. Mr. Tuck meet Mr. Hosea. Hosea popped Tuck; the ball squirted away and was scooped up by Tyler Tilton. Tilton shifted into high gear and 99 yards later he was dancing into the end zone. A potential 28-26 Burroughs lead had suddenly became 35-19 and although there were still over nine minutes remaining, the collective air escaped from the Arcadia balloon.

“Charlie made the big hit and I think Tyler ran faster than he ever has in his life,” said Burroughs Coach Keith Knoop. “That was a big defensive play.”

It was the play that finally killed the Apaches. But even then Arcadia still responded with a 33 yard touchdown pass from Myles Carr to Lagace to account for the final score Lagace, only a sophomore did it all for Arcadia returning kicks and punts, playing defense and catching 12 passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns.

“He’s just an awesome football player and he’s only a sophomore!” Knoop said.

Williams was the man for Burroughs. He had 15 carries for 187 yards and three touchdowns.

The two teams traded scores in the first quarter. Rodney Arnett scored on a one yard run to put Arcadia up 7-0 but Tadeo Zuniga answered with a 23 yard TD run to tie it.

After Lagace caught a 24 yard scoring strike from Tuck in the second quarter, Williams scored on a 16 yard run to put Burroughs up 14-13 at the half.

Williams busted off touchdown runs of 19 and 65 yards in the third quarter that were sandwiched around an eight yard touchdown pass from Tuck to Lagace to make it 28-19. Then Hosea and Tilton teamed up on the play at the one yard line to ice it.

Kohl Adams also had six catches for 38 yards for Burroughs and Lucas Yanez rushed for 56 yards and threw for 80 more.

Tuck completed 14 of 24 for 146 yards and two touchdowns for the Apaches. But he was also intercepted twice by Daniel Atlas in the fourth quarter. Carr replaced Tuck late in the contest and completed three passes for 47 yards but also was picked once.

Burroughs improved to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in league. Arcadia dropped to 1-5-1 overall and 1-3 in the Pacific.
