(Glendora) – Azusa Pacific jumped out to an 11-3 early advantage, fell behind by one at halftime but gained control in the second half to beat Dominican 71-64 Tuesday night at the Felix Event Center. The Cougars had three players in double figures with Troy Leaf leading the charge with 17. 

Trailing 36-35 at halftime, APU opened the second half with a 7-2 run to regain a lead that was never relinquished. Kevin Stafford and Tyler Monroe scored 11 and 10 respectively.

***The Cougars shot 43 percent from the field overall and 42 percent the three point line.

***Dominican out rebounded APU 38-36. Bertram Hall led the Cougars with seven.

***APU hit nine three pointers in all compared to seven for the Penguins.

***The Cougars went on a 16-6 run to open the second half turning a one point deficit into a nine point advantage.

***The Cougars led by as many as 14 in the second half.

***Neither team was prolific at the free throw line. APU shot 70 percent while Dominican was at 72.

***Myles Carrillo had 16 for Dominican while Devin Golston and Connor Haysbert each added 14.

***APU swept the season series with Dominican. The Cougars beat them 70-59 December 5.

***The Cougars improved to 8-5 (4-3 in PacWest) while Dominican dropped to 11-6 and 5-4.

***Next up for Azusa Pacific is a trip to Point Loma Friday night before returning home to face Dixie State at home next Monday night.
