(Covina) – JP Rodriguez knocked down five three pointers and scored 23 points overall to lead Workman to a 43-39 win over Gladstone Friday night in Montview League action.
Both teams came into the game tied for first with records of 10-1. The Lobos can now lock up the league title next week with wins over La Puente and Sierra Vista.
***Both teams came out of the gate stone cold as they each converted just one field goal in the first quarter. Gladstone led 3-2 after one.
***Rodriguez got going in the second for Workman hitting a pair of threes and a basket for eight points. G-Stone behind a Ben Reaves three and five points by Yoaun Villanueva led 17-15 at the break.
***Workman opened the third quarter with a 10-2 run and led 33-30 after three.
***Rodriguez hit three more threes in the third but the biggest one was hit by James Magaway who hit a three at the buzzer. The shot was clearly released after the buzzer sounded but the officials allowed it to stand.
***Rodriguez led all scorers with 23. No other Lobo was in double figures. Oliver Lopez had eight.
***Big man Manny Chavira led the Gladiators with 12 points and Carlos Ramos had eight.
***Gladstone was 3 for 14 from the field in the first half while Workman was 6 for 22.
***“We’re young and we came out really tense. I needed the seniors to step up and they did. And JP is JP,” – said Workman HC Martin Flores.
***“Knowing that we can come back is good. We came back at least three times this year. I was just trying to get open. I just need a little space,” Rodriguez said.
***Workman improved to 18-6 (11-1 in league) overall while Gladstone fell to 19-3 (10-2).
