(Pasadena) – Village Christian missed six free throws in the fourth quarter and made only three field goals in the final frame but still managed to escape with a 47-45 win over Maranatha Tuesday night on the Minutemen home floor.
With the victory Village Christian clinched the Olympic League title improving to 7-0 with only one game remaining. Second place Maranatha dropped to 5-2.
***Maranatha’s Tey Willams scored five big points in the fourth quarter but was rejected twice in the final minute by the Village Christian defense.
***Neither team shot well out of the gate. Maranatha led 10-8 after one and the score was tied at 20 at the half.
***Maranatha had the ball with nine seconds left but Village Christian forced a turnover as Williams stepped out of bounds.
***Bear Henderson scored 17 points for Village Christian to lead all scorers.
***Bennie Boatwright added 14 for VC and had some huge blocks in the middle.
***Maranatha had only one player in double figures – Nick Springer with 13.
***Former Muir HC Gamal Smalley is Tim Tucker’s assistant at Maranatha and his son Zach is a starting guard.
***Village hit only one three pointer while Maranatha knocked down four.
***Village led 34-32 after three and played the Minutemen even in the fourth to hold on.
***The Crusaders improved to 20-4 overall while Maranatha dropped to 13-12.
