Gabrielino went 10-0 to win the MVL Crown

(San Gabriel ) – Eli Peters scored 28 points and Bryan Phan added 19 to lead Gabrielino to a 61-45 win over South El Monte Friday night and complete a perfect 10-0 run in the Mission Valley League.

Gabrielino had already clinched the MVL title Wednesday night with a big win over El Monte but was still shooting for an undefeated league run. After a slow start the Eagles got rolling late in the first quarter and then opened it up in the second.

***After leading 14-9 after one, Gabrielino went on a 14-2 run to open the second to go up by 17. The Eagles led 30-16 at the break.

***Peters and Phan led the charge in the first half combining for 13 of the team’s 16 second quarter points.

***South El Monte was outscored 16-7 in the second quarter and converted just two field goals.

***South climbed back ito it with a 7-0 run to start the third quarter and get within seven.

***Alex Ortiz was eight of nine from the free throw line and led South El Monte with 16 points. Ortiz had eight points in the third.

***Eduardo Hernandez was also in double figures for South El Monte with 14.

***Peters scored six in the fourth quarter and Gary Hawkins got into the act for Gabrielino with seven in the final frame to finish off South.

***Peters was 11 for 18 from the field and five for seven from the line.

***”I expected us to have a good year. I’ve had Eli, Bryan and Sean (Takeuchi) since they were freshman. Plus we had other guys coming back,” said Gabrielino head coach John Carney.

***Gabrielino finished 22-3 overall and will open the CIF playoffs at home next Friday night. South El Monte went 7-3 overall (tied for second with El Monte) and 13-7 overall. South will make the playoffs as well.
