(Duarte) – La Salle broke open a scoreless tie with six runs in the sixth inning and went on to beat Temple City 6-0 Saturday to take the Duarte Tournament Championship.

Paula Damas pitched a complete game, allowed five hits and fanned four. She did not walk a batter. Damas also got the key blow in the sixth inning- a two run single to left that put the Lancers on the board 2-0. La Salle went on to score four more in the inning to ice it.

The way Damas was throwing one would have been enough. Temple City never got a runner beyond second base. The Rams had runners on first and second in the fifth on base hits by Celina Mesa and Bailee Weisz but Damas got out of the inning by getting the last hitter to hit back to the box.

Elisa Ponce matched Damas pitch for pitch through the first five before running into trouble in the sixth. Ponce allowed just three hits through the first five before four hits fueled the six run sixth.

In the sixth inning, Beverly Valerio led off with an infield hit and Caroline Knop and Kinsley Washington reached on errors. Damas laced a single to left to score two and Washington scored when the throw home got away. Vanessa Dwyer lined a single to left and Lauren Gomez walked. With two out Alexi Zate ripped a bases loaded singed to plate two more and Gomez scored on another throwing error. By the time the dust had settled La Salle had a six pack on the board and it was game, set, match.

Damas retired the final three batters in order in the seventh to end it.

La Salle improved to 4-0 overall while Temple City dropped to 3-2.
