(Whittier) – Defending Southeast Division champion La Serna was humbled on Thursday night in its 2014 opener as Ralston Valley (Arvada, CO) imposed its running game in a 47-24 win.

The Mustangs came out in the second half and scored two quick touchdowns to extend their lead to 27-10 in the third quarter and never were threatened.

Ralston Valley’s Andrew Wingard did the damage against the Lancers defense as he rushed for 201 yards on 19 carries. Wingard also returned a kick off 99 yards for touchdown with La Serna looking for a comeback late in the third quarter.

***Enrique Pacheco started his first game at quarterback for La Serna going 17 of 34 for 218 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

***The Lancers schedule doesn’t get any easier next week when they travel to Los Osos on Friday night.

***After the first quarter the game was tied 0-0.

*** Ralston Valley is currently ranked #6 in the Maxpreps Colorado State poll.

*** Mustang running backs were credited for 359 yards on the ground with Noah Wells (7 carries for 81 yards) and Kyle Bush (8 carries for 66 yards) rushing for 147 yards and two touchdowns.

*** Mustangs used both Cooper Loyd and Chase Heffley at quarterback.

*** In addition to Wingard’s offensive explosion, he added an interception late in the game to seal the victory.

***La Serna’s Jonathan Wise caught four passes for 82 yards. None bigger then his 30 yard catch late in the third quarter that kept a scoring drive alive.

***Lancers wide receiver Curtis Ashton caught six passes for 76 yards.

***La Serna’s Daniel Campos scored on a 44 yard touchdown pass and intercepted Loyd at the Lancers 15-yard line to thwart a Ralston Valley drive.
