Bob Alaniz led El Monte to the Mission Valley League boys title in 1981.

Bob Alaniz led El Monte to the Mission Valley League boys title in 1981.

Good Evening!

I didn’t know Rex Grossman was still playing quarterback for the Chicago Bears…

What is with the Del Rio League this year? These teams have gone after each other like a group of criminals squealing each other out.

I really hope last night wasn’t the end of Arcadia linebacker David Schuil’s football journey…He should be playing somewhere next fall at the next level.

I wish no ill will to CV, I think the turnaround the last two seasons has been terrific, but I just don’t see them having legs beyond the first round of the playoffs.

Purposely waiting until the fifth paragraph to say this, but I like Burroughs over Burbank tonight. The Bulldogs have more offensive weapons, but the loss to Pasadena had to wound the soul.

Which is exactly why PHS will beat Muir for the first time since 1995…all the momentum of 2009 is behind the Bulldogs…and this is a team I would not want to play in the first round.

Arroyo is going to pound South…Gladstone beats La Puente…and San Gabriel will hold serve against Montebello…

I will post a San Marino-Temple City prediction at ten o’clock tonight.

Scanlan favorite, and former Dodger, Wilson Betemit signed a free agent minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals…Yes, his future does seem quite bright.

Dwyane Wade’s dunk last night was nice…but the greatest ever?

Speaking of great dunks, 1983, Julius Erving over Michael Cooper at the Spectrum…much hotter…

Doctor J and I are tight, he called me “Son” and put a hand on the back of my neck when I was a kid…Needless to say it inspired my love for basketball and helped me pattern my all-earth version of Erving’s game.

Overlook Azusa’s Abraham Ochoa at your own peril.

Burbank’s Ulises Ochoa needs just 11-yards tonight reach a grand for the season. The last B-Bank back to clear a thousand in a season was Marcus Hood, in 2006, when he rushed for 1,308-yards…Which is the same amount Ochoa has rushed for in his Bulldog career. Currently he is seventh on the school’s all-time list and just 60-yards behind Tarin Cardenaz (1987-88) in the sixth spot.

Note from EMHS: Now FORMER El Monte boys basketball coach John Gillette did praise fellow colleagues in the EM athletic program for having his back during the madness leading to his removal at the end of October.

No truth to the rumor former HC’s Gerald Feller or Bob Alaniz will be returning to the Lions basketball fold.

While Feller, who coached the powerhouse El Monte teams of late 1970’s, has vanished  into the wind…Alaniz led the 1980-81 squad to an undefeated Mission Valley League title. That squad featured the likes of Sandy Campero, Jim Roberts, and a human bruise by the name of Chuck Jeffreys.

Alaniz went on to a solid coaching career at St. Bernard’s.

Stay thirsty my friends…
