(Glendora) – El Monte jumped out to a 32-0 lead in the first half and rolled to a 40-22 win over Gladstone Thursday night at Citrus College.

Gladstone made it interesting in the third quarter scoring twice and converting two two-point conversions to cut the Lion lead to 32-16 but El Monte scored again early in the fourth to ice it. The Lions continued their patten of going for it on fourth down although they did kick it away once in the third quarter.

El Monte quarterback Edward Dominguez put the ball in the air 50 times and completed 27 while throwing three touchdown passes. He also ran for a score.

***Devin Romero had 18 carries for 72 yards and a score for the Lions.

***Dominguez’ favorite targets were Saul Chavez and Fernando Espinoza who combined for 20 catches, 169 yards and three touchdowns.

***Christian Herrera picked off a pass and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown with 45 seconds left in the first half for a 32-0 El Monte advantage.

***Both of Espinoza’s touchdowns came in the first quarter when Dominguez hit him for strikes of 19 and 11 yards.

***El Monte was 2 for 6 on two point conversion attempts.

***Santiago Kirchfield took a hand off on the opening kick off in the third quarter returned it 82 yards for a touchdown for Gladstone’s first score.

***The Gladiators scored again with 2:08 left in the third on a five-yard pass from Kyle Karbowski to Jakeob Sedano.

***Dominguez hit Saul Chavez with a five-yard bullet with 8:08 left in the game to make it 40-16.

***Kirchfield had 16 caries for 57 yards for G-Stone. Karbowski was 5 for 11 for 39 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted four times.

***El Monte running back Roy Barrajas missed his second straight game with a broken collarbone but should return next week against Rosemead.

***El Monte went for it on fourth and 15 from its own five late in the contest and was stopped. Gladstone cashed in for its last score on a five-yard TD pass from Karbowksi to Harrison Huff.

***The Lions got their first win and are now 1-3. G-Stone fell to 0-3.
