(Whittier) – California ran their unbeaten streak to nine games as they defeated Rowland 55-27 in the first round of the CIF-SS Southeast Division playoffs.
The Condors are on an absolute roll after starting the season 0-2 and losing to the Raiders in Week One 17-10.
California running back Terris Jones left no doubt who was in control of the game with 11:47 to play in the game when he burst down the sidelines for a 78-yard score to put the dagger in the hearts of Rowland fans.
Jones had a game for the ages as he carried the ball 21 times for 292 yards and four scores. He added two catches and 132 yards with two scores. In the previous meeting Jones could only muster 30 yards offensively.
For the first time in five weeks, the Raiders were able to have the services of starting quarterback Michael Ball since going down to an injury. Ball finished the evening 11 of 21 for 152 yards and three touchdowns.
Rowland started the scoring as Josh Onovughe (17 carries for 109 yards and a touchdown) bounced off a California defender and ran for a 61-yard score.
The Condors would answer quickly as quarterback Adam Contreras found Jones for a 53 yard pass on a post route.
Jones would later burst for a 66-yard run as he eluded three defenders at the line of scrimmage for his second score of the game and California’s first lead of the game.
After a Raider score tied the game, the Condors took advantage of a mental lapse by the Rowland defense as Christian Hernandez was left undefended on the left side of the field for the 34-yard score as Adam Contreras (four of four for 185 yards and three touchdowns) played pitch and catch with him.
The defensive lapse was what California needed to begin the onslaught of scoring that would soon follow in the form of Bryan Barragan’s 10-yard sweep to take the Condors into the halftime break up by 14.
The second half was all Jones as he rushed for scores of two, 48 and 46 yards and added a 78 pass reception for a touchdown to blow open the game.
The Raiders made a valiant attempt to get back to within striking distance early in the second half after Jones had his only miscue of the night on a fumble. Ball would find Steven David open up the middle for nine-yards to cut the lead to eight with 7:00 minutes to play in the third quarter.
It was as close as Rowland would get as Jones answered with a two-yard dive that was highlighted by his seven carries for 66 yards on the drive.
California will now host Burbank in the quarterfinals on Friday.
