Wildcats Beat up Eagles

By George Hernandez

(Monrovia) – Nick Bueno passed for 100 yards and rushed for another 100 to lead Monrovia to a 40-7 win over South El Monte Friday night in the first round of the CIF SS Mid-Valley Division playoffs.

The Wildcats got on the board fast when Dujawn Jones landed on a fumble from Ellis McCarthy in the end zone to give them an early 6-0 lead. After an Eagles three and out Bueno made it look easy when he scored on a 60 yard touchdown run.

On the first play of the second quarter Derrick Johnson scored on a 13 yard run to make it 20-0. Then another three and out for South led to a Jay Henderson 55 yard punt return for a score.

Bueno then put the game away when he fired touchdown passes to Jones and Henderson late in the second quarter.

With a 40-0 halftime lead both teams went with a running clock the second half. Monrovia only had one play in the third quarter which ended up being a fumble.

The Eagles lone score came when quarterback Anthony Jiminez went in from one yard out on a quarterback sneak. Rene Flores led South El Monte with 81 yards rushing, and Freddy Aguilar had 11 tackles and two fumble recoveries on defense.

South’s season comes to an end at 3-8, after starting off 0-5. Monrovia will travel to Paraclete next week to face the defending CIF champs.
