(Chino) – Chino played host to West Covina in a game that was characterized by two halves of football that could not have been more different. The Bulldogs were first to put points on the board and went on to beat Chino 42-16 Friday night in Chino.
An 18 yard run by Henry Martinez got the Bulldogs started at 7-0. The Cowboys answered with a drive capped by a 3-yard TD pass from Thornton to Murray off his own teammates tipped ball to even the score 7-7. With 4:58 left in the second the Bulldogs were stopped on downs, failing to score with first and goal inside the Cowboys five. Chino capitalized on the defensive stop driving 98 yards to go up 14-7 with 2:27 left in the second. The Bulldogs, deflated, received a shot of life in the arm via a 54 yard punt return for a TD by Isaiah Love to go into the half tied 14-14.
The first half left fans with the impression they were watching two evenly matched teams. The second half left fans with no doubt on whom the better football team is. In the third quarter West Covina established control of the game by taking their opening drive 69 yards for the score to take a lead 21-14.West Covina went on to dominate scoring once more in the third and twice in the fourth to win big 42-16.
***West Covina’s Martinez finished with 96 yds. on 18 carries 2 TD’s. Isaiah Love finished with 4 carries for 99 yds. 2 rushing TD’s, 1 punt return TD.
***Chino’s Josh Thornton finished 18/35 238 yds. 1 passing TD, 1 Int.
***Both Chino and West Covina’s defenses each had goal line stands, keeping the opposing offense out of the end zone with 1 and goal within the 5 yd. line.
***Chino’s 2 point came on a safety with 11:03 left in the 4th to cut the lead to 28-16.
***Chino is at Diamond Ranch next week 10/24.
***West Covina hosts Los Altos next week 10/24.
***West Covina is atop the Hacienda league standing s 5-2 overall, 2-0 in league.
