Monrovia Eliminates Don Lugo in Overtime

(Monrovia)- The Monrovia Wildcats led, followed, and finally triumphed over the visiting Don Lugo Conquistadores in overtime, 26-20, Friday evening at Monrovia High School.

Monrovia’s final scoring contribution was added by junior quarterback Asaph Zamora’s 15-yard touchdown run in overtime.

The Wildcats scored first when senior Jordan Nathan ran for a 31-yard touchdown with 7:31 remaining in the opening quarter. Monrovia would also receive scoring contributions from senior Octavius Spenser in the form of a 70-yard kickoff return with 3:43 remaining in the opening stanza. Senior kicker Blake Cusick added a pair of field goals from 42 and 45-yards respectively.

Don Lugo, although slow out of the gate, simply would not go away. The Conquistadores got on the scoreboard with 5:37 remaining in the first quarter, courtesy of senior kicker Leo Partida’s 35-yard field goal. Partida would add another FG from 30-yards, with 5:41 remaining in quarter number two. Also contribution to Lugo’s scoring were junior quarterback Dane Ford, connecting with senior wideout David Delgado for a 35-yard score, and senior running back Preston Carr, who scored on a 4-yard touchdown run to provide go- ahead score with 9:37 remaining in the contest.

Monrovia, with a season record of 10-1, advances to the second round of CIF play. They will face Los Altos next Friday. Don Lugo finishes the season with a 6-5 record.
