  We know it’s still football season but basketball hit the ground running this week.   Here’s a complete roundup of area games since Monday, (Tournament and non-league), compiled by Mid-Valley correspondent Corey Kwok.

Monday 11/30

Muir 88, Northridge Academy 28 – NL

Deshawn Hayes was an absolute machine for Muir, scoring 36 points on 14 for 18 shooting, and dropping 4 of 7 bombs in addition to eight rebounds and six steals in an 88-28 Mustang stampede.

 

Tevin Polk joined in the rodeo with 12 and Justin Knowles and Jelani Mitchell each added 11.

Baldwin Park 84, Firebaugh 55 – NL

Eddie Gamboa buried 3 of 4 from beyond the arc and dished out nine assists as well to help fuel host Baldwin Park past Firebaugh 84-55.

 

Fernie Morelos notched a double-double of 15 points, 11 rebounds in addition to three blocked shots. Teammate Joey De La Torre followed suit, scoring 14, caroming 12, and rejecting 2. The Braves rushed the wind out of the visiting Falcons with a 26 point second quarter.

Hoover 72, Sun Valley Poly 53 – T (Campbell Hall Coaches vs. Cancer Classic)

Nogales 81, Garey 54 – NL

 

Chatsworth 55, Rowland 43 – T (Glendora-Rowland @ Rowland)

Rowland rallied to go up 20-19 at halftime but Chatsworth inched clear in the latter half to prevail 55-43. The Raiders’ tandem of Steven David (19 points, 5 boards) and Sharif Watson (13, 11) combined for 32 points and 16 rebounds.

Hawthorne 66, Glendale 62 – T (Burbank HS)

 

Whittier 64, Orange 57 – T (John Glenn HS)

The sharpshooting trio of Juan Quintero, Gary Matthews and Sam Gamboa had 48 and went 18 for 22 from the field for Whittier in a come from behind 64-57 triumph over Orange.

Flintridge Prep 61, Monrovia 44 – NL

Monrovia was led by 17 points from Jamel Bars and another 11 by Duncan Machi in a 44-61 loss to Flintridge Prep. Bars rejected a shot and also notched 14 boards for a double double. Teammate Carl Daniels grabbed 10 caroms.

Tuesday 12/1

South Hills 62, Bonita 55 – NL

JP Rodriguez worked a jaw dropping crossover before dishing to Roman Hand dropped a key downtown bomb, igniting the stands into a frenzy as South Hills got itself some breathing room late. The Huskies overcame a 23-9 first quarter hole and won going away, 62-55.

 

Hand had 13 points and downed 3 of 4 in three point land, and also cleaned the boards on both ends for 12 caroms. Rodriguez led all scorers with 22.

 

James Northup led the Bearcats with 13 while five others contributed six or more, led by Erik Woodruff’s 9 and CJ Miller’s 8.

California 56, Wilson 55 – NL

Cal High clung on by a nose in a 56-55 thriller over Wilson of Hacienda Heights.

 

Shawn Carter led the Condors’ scoring with 15. Keith Smith totaled 14 while securing 16 rebounds. Jordan Saleapaga hit 6 for 7 FG for 13, and Richard Bardales and Chris Ortiz combined for 13 assists between themselves.

Bishop Amat 58, Monrovia 33 – NL

The Lancers opened up the first up 18-5 and cruised to a convincing 58-33 victory. They were led by seven assists and 12 points from Dion Hudson. Tyler Goldston scored a dozen as well. Adam Balderas added 9 and had 3 steals.

 

Machi was the lone Monrovia player in double figures with 10.

Northview 77, Temple City 56 – NL

It was a tale of two halves as Temple City held a 27-23 lead at the break before Northview wrecked havoc in the latter half with a 54-29 explosion to cruise handily, 77-56.

 

Zach Aquino and Matt Valazza took down 5 rebounds each and scored 13 and 12 to lead the TC charge. Harriman Chiang had 10 while Caleb Halverson accounted for his nine with 3 of 5 triples.

Glendora 63, Ganesha 30 – T (Glendora-Rowland @ Glendora)

South Pasadena 62, Alhambra 60 – NL

The Tigers came into the Moors’ den looking like they meant business with a 25-6 explosion in the first, but Alhambra rallied and chipped away in huge chunks to get back in it late. However, many opportunities were blown in the waning minutes thanks to an unkind rim, and South Pasadena survived, 62-60.

 

Showing the way for Alhambra was Carlos Martinez who notched 15 points and 13 rebounds. Vai Peko joined teammates Chris Acosta and Jason Wong with two steals apiece.

El Monte 55, Azusa 53 (1 OT) – NL

The visiting Lions, quick out the gate, led 16-6 after one, only to watch Azusa gradually inch its way back to force overtime. But El Monte came out victorious 6 to 4 in a 55-53 barnburner at the Aztec Fieldhouse.

 

Eddie Landeros led the Lions with 22, followed by 12 from John Yang and 8 from Robert Yu.

Hoover 77, Canoga Park 41 – T (Campbell Hall Coaches vs. Cancer Classic)

 

South El Monte 55, Gladstone 46 – NL

The Southmen, trailing by eight after a half, rallied to a 42-42 draw after three before shutting down Gladstone 13-4 in the fourth to pull out a 55-46 victory.

 

Isaiah Alcantar and Ray Natividad scored 11 and 10 respectively while Anthony Jimenez and Billy Avalos notched seven apiece. Anthony Villacis, the brother of former SEM star Alex Villacis, and a transfer from Bosco Tech, added 4.

Sierra Vista 66, Covina 46 – NL

Sierra Vista repelled a third quarter comeback by Covina with a 22-9 burst in the fourth to cruise 66-46.

Trabuco Hills 88, Bassett 30 – T (Loara HS)

A relentless Trabuco Hills offense rebounded from a 49-40 loss to regional powerhouse Los Alamitos to pour it on over outclassed Bassett. T-Hills strung together 26 assists (23 in first half) and swished 11 from the I-5 freeway en route to a titanic 58 point, 88-30 romp.

 

The Mustangs saw Kyle Wilson hit 5 of 8 from long range towards a game best 21 points. Thierry Pace and Caelen Sanders scored 14 and 10, while three other teammates tossed in 9 apiece.

 

Alfredo Barron had half of Bassett’s 30 on 9 of 10 free throws and three buckets from the field.

Garden Grove 81, Whittier 74 (2 OT) – T (John Glenn HS)

The Argonauts got the best of Whittier 9-2 in a grueling double overtime clash to escape with an 81-74 win.

 

Quintero and Daniel Lopez checked out with 15 apiece (11-12 FG) and Matthews and Kevin Medina each dropped in 13.

Baldwin Park 61, Mountain View 44 – T (Bosco Tech HS)

Baldwin Park’s 30 point advantage heading into the final panel proved too much of an obstacle to climb for Mountain View. The Vikings’ 25-12 fourth quarter surge came far too late. The View’s 25 fourth quarter points were six more than all they had scored in the previous three periods combined.

 

Tomas Montes led the Braves with 15 followed by Morelos’ 14. Gus Vasquez had 11, and De La Torre added 10.

Crossroads 48, San Gabriel 42 – T (Bosco Tech HS)

 

Don Lugo 63, La Serna 59 – NL

Don Lugo started fast and finished strong but had a little trouble in the middle. La Serna went on a 35-18 run to grab a six point advantage heading into the fourth before Don Lugo surged 25-15 for a 63-59 victory.
