(West Covina) – The East-West All-Star game which has been traditionally been played in late May or early June, has been moved to January 30 at West Covina High School, West Covina HC Mike Maggiore confirmed today.

Maggiore, who also acts as the game organizer, said the boundaries have been changed allowing more schools to participate.

“The boundary is now Azusa Avenue with the Whittier schools still on the East,” Maggiore said. “Bishop Amat, Northview, Los Altos, and West Covina, etc. are on the West side now.”

It has long been speculated that the early summer game led to less participation and less interest from quality players. Now with a game just six weeks after the championship games, and extended boundaries, an excitement and anticipation will return and it will truly be an All-Star game.

Paul Schilling, who just led Crescenta Valley to the Southeast Division Championship, will team up with Maranatha HC Steve Bogan to coach the West, while Colony’s Steve Randall, who just coached his team to the Central Division title, will head the East.

“I’m excited about the response. I think we will have the best players in the area representing their schools. Also the time of the year is better. It’s still football season,” Maggiore said. “In the heart of the NFL playoffs- right before signing day. There should be a lot of interest of colleges to see the game and get one more evaluation.”
