(Mazmanian Field- Mt. San Antonio College) –  UC San Diego beat Azusa Pacific 5-3 Monday at Mazmanian Field to knock the Cougars out of the NCAA Division 2 Regional West Playoffs.

Azusa Pacific scored first when Blake James hit the first pitch he saw for a home run over the left field fence. UC San Diego responded with two in the second on a bases loaded walk to Tyler Howsley and a run scoring single by Brandon Shirley. Michael Fairchild replaced starter Wyatt Wood, who had already walked four.

The Tritons added two on an RBI base hit by Michael Mann in the fifth and a solo shot by Justin Flatt in the sixth.

Trailing 5-1, the Cougars scratched out two in the ninth when Daniel Martin doubled and Jordan Brower singled. Martin scored on a fielder’s choice ground ball by Ryan Santana and Santana scooted home on a wild pitch. But that was all APU could muster as UC San Diego prevailed.

The Cougars finished the season at 34-20 in its first year as an NCAA member.
