South Hills Grinds out Win in Opener

By Joseph Rodriguez

(Pomona) –Diamond Ranch hosted the South Hills Huskies under first year head coach Jimmy Welker Friday night. In what turned out to be a defensive struggle, the Huskies opened their season with a win, 7-0.

Both teams fought to find any offensive consistency though the game. With 3:09 left in the second Ryan Torres scored from five yards out which turned out to be the only score of the night. But that’s not to say the game was without drama. With under two minutes minutes left in the fourth the Panthers drove down to the 21 of the Huskies only to fail in their bid to tie the game.

  • ·         After looking a little shaky in the opening drive for the Huskies, QB Dylan O’Leary settled in and did as much as you can ask for out of a Freshman QB. He went 14/22 for 89 yds. with no picks or turnovers.
  • ·         The Huskies RB Ryan Torres carried the ball 22 times for 36 yds. and 1 TD.
  • ·         RB Davion Gaisie rushed for 38 yds. on 12 carries for the Panthers
  • ·         The Panthers QB Joseph Sebastian was 7/19 88 yds. 1 Int.
  • ·         South Hills DT Austin Moreno almost fulfilled every lineman’s dream. Moreno intercepted a tipped screen pass with 2:51 left in the fourth quarter  only to be brought down four yards shy of everlasting glory.
  • ·         Penalties, Penalties, Penalties- the amount of penalties in this game for both teams is something each head coach will address in film Saturday morning. This is a factor in why each offense struggled to get going.
  • ·         Next week Diamond Ranch will host Rosemead in non-conference game.
  • ·         The Huskies will travel to La Habra to meet the Highlanders in a non-conference game.
