Montebello’s Mendibles Methodically Mangles “Monte”

The Montebello Oilers outscored, out ran, and outplayed the opposition Friday Evening, as the Oilers posted a 44-30 victory over the host El Monte Lions in the 2015-2016 season opener for both teams.

The game was billed on social media as a showdown between two of the area’s premiere running backs: Montebello’s Isaac Mendibles and El Monte’s Roy Barajas. As such, the game did not disappoint. Mendibles accounted for 365 all purpose yards and four touchdowns, scoring on Kick-Off returns of 82 and 75 yards, rushing for a 48 yard score, and catching a 60 yard TD pass from QB Ryan Rivera. Barajas, for his part, rushed for 224 yards, scoring twice on runs of 11 and 55 yards. Additionally, Barajas scored on 2 two-point conversion attempts. In total, these two running backs accounted for over 600 yards in offense and 40 of the games 66 points.

The game also featured some fine play on the part of the quarterbacks. El Monte’s Edward Dominguez completed 21 of 38 passes for 184, including a TD pass to

WR Robert Gonzalez. Montebello’s Rivera, in addition to the 60 yard connection to Mendibles, also threw a TD pass to WR Andy Brown. Rivera finished the evening with 7 completions for 180 yards and two scores.
