(POMONA) – With less than a minute to play in the fourth, quarterback Darreon Lockett completed 2-for-2 for 43-yards, drove his team to the one yardline setting up Edwin Martinez for the game winning 24-yard field goal to beat California 43-41 Friday night at Pomona high school.
With 1:08 left in the fourth, Cal running back Andrew Reyes punched his way into the end zone from three yards out to give Cal a 43-41 lead.
Four plays and 38 seconds later, Lockett connected with wide out Brian Lamb for a 41-yard touchdown pass. Unfortunately they could not convert the 2-point conversion. Cal lead 41-40 with 30-seconds left in the game.
To nobody’s surprise, Pomona lined up for the onside kick and Lamb recovered the ball at Cal’s 43- yard line.
Lockett connected with Chris Trimble for 22-yards. On the very next play Lockett connected with Cortha McNair for 21-yards to put the Red Devils at the one with less than three seconds on the clock. A false start pushed the field goal attempt back from 19-yards to 24. Neither school had a time out to either freeze Martinez or relax him. He ended the game when his kick sailed through the uprights, closing out any Condor comeback.
Following a low scoring first half and being down 20-13, the Red devils offense, led by Lockett took eight plays to tie the score at 20 apiece. Lockett scrambled his way for a 18-yard touchdown with 9:15 left to play in the third.
However, Cal answered right back with a touchdown on the ensuing possession. Quarterback Evan Barajas faked the pitch and scored on a two-yard keeper putting his team up six with 4:21 in the quarter. Following the PAT, Cal led 27-20
Pomona took no time to respond to Cal’s 11-play scoring drive. Just 15 seconds later running back Jarvaris Steward scored on a 36-yard run. Tying the score at 27.
Both teams continued to trade scoring blows throughout the second half.
