Chargers Conquer At Los Altos

(Hacienda Heights)— With 3:23 left in the fourth quarter, Charter Oaks’ Jeremy Caldwell sacked Los Altos’ quarterback Michael Campbell on a fourth and long to seal the Chargers 49-35 win on Friday night at Patrick J. Mauch Memorial Stadium.

Charter Oak running back Zion Echols tallied 323 total yards and scored four touchdowns: two by ground, one receiving and another by retuning a kickoff off 97-yards to paydirt.

A low scoring first half gave way to a Chargers’ explosion in the second as they scored on five of their seven possessions.

Kamden Brown started the onslaught when he faked the handoff and booted around the Conquerors defense to put his team up 21-7 with 7:40 in the third.

On the ensuing drive, Campbell took the same play and duplicated the same outcome when he optioned to keep the ball and scored from 45-yards out.

Three minutes later, Brown answered back when he connected with Jermaine Braddock on the back side post for the 16-yard scoring pass. CO now led 28-14.

Right before the quarter ended, the Conquerors answered back when Campbell capped a six play drive when he hit Khayman King with a 37-yard touchdown pass.

The Chargers offensive line continued give time for Brown to pass. He took advantage at the start of the fourth quarter with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Dareon Nash.

Los Altos answered back with a six play drive that ended when Campbell scrambled into the end zone from 7-yards out. It was now 35-28 Charter Oak with 7:08 left in the game.

The teams continued to trade blows as Echols’ 97-yard touchdown return on the kickoff was followed two plays later by the Conquerors’ Tyler Nevens 79-yard race to the end zone with a hand-off.

After the Chargers next drive was derailed by penalties they punted the ball back. On the first play of the Los Altos possession, the Chargers Dwayne Meyers sacked Campbell for an 8-yard loss. After an incomplete pass and a short gain by Nevens, Campbell was sacked on fourth and 19 with less than four minutes left in regulation.

From there Echols added the final touches when he pounded his way into the end zone to end the discussion and the game.

Zion Echols 25 carries 146 yard 2 TD; 4 catches 35 yards

Zion scored the teams first two touchdowns at the start of the game. His first came when he slipped his way into the end zone from 2-yards out. His second came when he leaped for the Brown pass in the corner of the end zone

“I was trying to win and that’s the bottom line, ” said Echols. “I did everything possible.”

“It’s Los Altos and Charter Oak at Los Altos and it’s just football,” said Charger Coach Lou Farrar, “four quarters of football, nonstop.”
