Redlands Pummels Poets

(Redlands) – The University of Redlands seniors celebrated their last home game of the season Saturday with a 59-7 win over the Whittier Poets.

A minute into the game Redlands’ junior Aaron Mandell intercepted a pass at the 7 yard line and returned it for a touchdown for a 7-0 lead.

A series later, senior Kevin Russell threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Yoshio Hasegawa and Redlands went up 14-0.

With eight minutes left in the first quarter and third down for the Poets, Junior quarterback Justin Moore is intercepted by sophmore Adam Goss (South Hills).

Redlands takes advantage of the turnover when Russell scrambles in for a score to make it 21-0.

Later in the quarter, sophmore Alex Andrighetto hauls in a pass in the end zone from Russell and Redlands takes a 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, a 14-yard pass to Cole Blackburn gives the Bulldogs a 35-0 advantage.

Later, the Poets finally get on the board when Moore fires the ball to Freshmen Nick Krska who makes the catch in the end zone.

With less than 30 seconds left in the half, after a penalty pushes them back, the Bulldogs kicker boots a 54-yard field goal for a 38-7 halftime lead.

Colin Spencer returns a punt for a touchdown in the third quarter and Redlands extends the lead to 45-7.

After another touchdown pass from Russell to Christian Guzman late in the third quarter, Noah Magaña finds the end zone for Redlands in the fourth quarter for the final score of the contest.

Redlands coach of 28 years, Mike Maynard, empties his bench in the last three minutes of the game and when the clock hits zeroes the Bulldogs celebrate the victory.

Redlands (3-2), makes their way to Chapman University next Saturday while the Whittier Poets (0-5), play Claremont at home.
