(Glendale) – Freshman Cole Doyle fired a 52-yard touchdown pass to Will Rees with 2:40 left in the game to give Crescenta Valley a 28-27 win over Arcadia Thursday night at Moyse Field.

Doyle was called up just this week when starting quarterback Evan Nelson broke his collarbone last week. Doyle delivered leading the Falcons to not only a victory but also a third place finish in the Pacific and also a spot in the playoffs. Arcadia, which rebounded from a 21-0 deficit to take a 27-21 lead, is most likely done for the season.

Doyle shared time at quarterback with Tyler Hill throughout the contest. Hill threw for a pair of touchdown passes and also ran for one. His one-yard plunge in the second quarter gave the Falcons a 21-0 lead.

The Falcons looked like they would cruise from there but the tide turned late in the second. Tyler Hill picked off a pass and although he appeared to be in the end zone the officials placed the ball at the one-yard line. The Falcons then fumbled and  Arcadia recovered at the one. The Apaches then cashed in with a three-yard blast by Quentin Cortes and a two-point conversion to make it 21-8.

Arcadia reeled off the next 19 points in the second half to go up 27-21. Raeshawn Roland’s 85-yard punt return in which he hurdled a Falcon defender gave the Apaches the six point lead with 3:02 left. Arcadia’s kicker is out with an injury so the Apaches went for two and were denied. Doyle delivered the game winner 22 seconds later.

*** Brian Erickson caught a 11-yard pass from Hill on the Falcons first drive for a 7-0 lead.

*** On CV’s next possession Boston Lakin hauled in a 48-yad pass from Hill for a 14-0 advantage.

*** Hillier capped a 16-play, 80-yard drive early in the third quarter to cut the Falcon lead to 21-15.

*** Hillier hit Craig Carrillo with a 29-yard strike to tie it at 21 with 6:23 left in the fourth. The extra point attempt was blocked.

*** Arcadia had two turnovers (both interceptions by Hill) while CV turned it over once – the fumble on a bad exchange from center at the one yard line.

*** Arcadia had one last chance but turned the ball over on downs when a 26 yard pass from Hillier to Roland left them six yards short of a first down.

*** The Apaches finished the season 5-5 overall and 4-3 in league (fourth in the Pacific.)

*** Lakin caught four passes for 126 yards for Crescenta Valley.

*** “Cole Doyle. That’s a name that you’re going to be hearing for the next few years.” – Former Crescenta Valley lineman Sam Campbell.

*** The Falcons improved to 7-3 (5-2 in league) which is good for third place. They will find out their first round Southeast Division playoff opponent Sunday.
