(Downey) The St. Francis Golden Knights survived a late surge by the host Warren Bears, winning 21-19 Friday evening at Justice Stadium, at Warren High School.
The contest was close from the start. The teams matched scores, with the difference being two unsuccessful PAT attempts by the bears. St. Francis opened the scoring, with a 5- yard touchdown run by Senior running back Tre Polamalu on their first possession of the evening. Not to be outdone, Warren answered on their first possession, scoring on a 2 yard TD run. Warren would miss the PAT, making the score 7-6 as the first quarter expired.
St. Francis scored again to close the first half of play. Areg Nazarian found pay dirt, scoring on a 4-yard run. Warren would answer in the third quarter as Antwan Mims found the end zone for a score. Unfortunately, matching scores was the best that Warren could muster, as St. Francis never trailed in this contest.
St. Francis put the game away in the fourth quarter, assembling a drive that would last for 10 minutes and 17 seconds….culminating with a 2-yard scoring run by quarterback Miles Bryant. Warren answered as Jordan Yancy found Marquis Lowe for the game’s final score.
Warren had one final opportunity. However, the onside kick attempt was covered by St. Francis, which then ran out the remaining: 57 of play, subsequently sealing the victory.
