Central Division Game Night: Finals

Game is at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated

Saturday, December 5

San Marino (13-0) vs. (Charter Oak 12-1)

Head-to-Head: Charter Oak leads 4-0, All-Time
These teams are familiar with each other. A year ago they met in the second round of the Central playoffs and the Chargers took a 49-31 victory. The same quarterbacks were on the field and Carson Glazier fired three touchdown passes and threw for 371 yards. He was countered by Kam Brown’s two touchdown passes and Zion Echols’ 321 yards and five touchdowns.

It was the first meeting between the schools since the regular season final in 1963. Charter Oak, in its original incarnation (prior to merging with Royal Oak H.S. in the early 1980s), was briefly a member of the Rio Hondo League.

The Titans have never beaten the Chargers.
Edge: Charter Oak

Defense:
San Marino is not only the highest scoring team in the Central Division, but it has also allowed the fewest points (130). That can be a bit deceiving since they only allowed 28 points in a very weak RHL.

San Marino finished second in the division in picks, but the question is can they get to Brown?

The Titans like to throw and Charter Oak likes to sack the quarterback. The Chargers are averaging over three a game. They are also in the top five of for interceptions. They have the athletes to match up with the like of JP Shohfi.
Edge: Charter Oak

Ground Game:
Echols has rushed for over 2,000 yards and 36 touchdowns this season (43 Tds total). The Titans couldn’t stop him last year and it won’t be any different this time around.

San Marino’s Michael Chan has rushed for nearly a thousand yards and 19 touchdowns. Excellent, but not excellent enough.
Edge: Charter Oak

Passing Game:
We see it like this. Carson Glazier has to make plays. Kam Brown has to get the ball to his play-makers. Brown can have an off game (can, but never seems to) and his team can still pick him up. Glazier has no room for error, he needs to stay on the field, stand in against the rush and get the ball downfield.
Edge: San Marino

Coaching:
The easiest way to go here would be to declare for Don Lou Farrar because of all of his experience unbeatable and leave it at that. All true, but Mike Hobbie has literally resurrected San Marino football. He has a lot of talent but does not have the supply of riches Farrar has, however, he’s undefeated, in the championship game. Hobbie is hungry.
Edge: San Marino

Home Field:
This is a home game for the Chargers at Citrus College. The Titans fan support has improved, but the folks in San Marino still don’t understand what they really got in this team.
Edge: Charter Oak

Winner?:
The Chargers have won 11 in a row, the Titans 13…and the winner is…
Charter Oak 40 San Marino 24
