Central Division Coach of The Year: San Marino’s Mike Hobbie

"What's cooler than cool?" "Mike Hobbie!" "Ice cold!"

“What’s cooler than cool?”
“Mike Hobbie!”
“Ice cold!”

In a normal year, a year like any other we’ve experienced around these parts, a lot of coaches would have been in this discussion. A lot of teams put together some great years. Some programs rose from mediocrity to title contender.

However, nothing looked like or compared to what Mike Hobbie (and staff) accomplished at San Marino. In 2015, Hobbie’s fifth season, the Titans climbed to the top of the ladder and won CIF.

Fans and critics shouldn’t have been surprised, but we all were.

San Marino’s 7-4 record in 2011 earned Hobbie and staff mild applause. Then three consecutive second round playoff appearances raised eyebrows, and the title victory over Charter Oak in December defied all expectations.

This man knows his business. Go to MaxPreps, go the Central OC of The Year Award we posted two weeks ago…those numbers will tell you all you need to know.

No-brainer decision on this one!! Mike Hobbie works his butt off for the kids. He and his staff are in the film room and on the “chalk” board past midnight, before 6 am, and all weekend. Hobbie personally runs every single weight room . . . every single day . . . every school day of the year. His practices are super high energy, filled with information, motivation, and preparation, and capped off with emotional life lessons. It is happily exhausting even to WATCH one of his practices. The players on his teams would run through brick walls for him. The word that most often comes out of his players’ mouths when asked about Hobbie: “genius.” More importantly than any of the above, he loves kids, he loves developing young men, and he is loves building character and then watching with pride as it takes root and flourishes. Mike Hobbie is nothing less than a home town hero! Go Titans!
