Denney Has Record-Breaking Night

(La Canada, Ca) – La Canada’s Shannon Denney scored a school record 42 points to lead the Lady Spartans to a 76-33 win over San Marino in Rio Hondo League play.

“It felt real good to break the record,” said Denney.  “Early on in the game I was getting frustrated with San Marino’s style of play but it made me stronger. I really didn’t even know how close to the record I was.”

Denney broke the single game scoring record held by Mellissa Lord in the fourth quarter of a lopsided victory that saw her teammates lobby for her to get the ball late in the game to break the 17 year record.

“Shannon’s teammates wanted her on the floor to get the record,” said La Canada head coach Tamar Hill.  “In my 10 years of coaching I have never seen that accomplished.  I knew she was close to putting her name up on the wall and she deserved to break the record once she got close.”

Denney would score 21 points in each half and was red-hot from the field shooting 20 of 23.  In addition, Denney had 15 rebounds and one steal.

The Titans played an aggressive style defense that caused problems for La Canada early in the first quarter as they only led by four.

After the first quarter it was all Lady Spartans as they went on a 21-6 run in the second quarter to blow open a close game.

San Marino was led by Christine Law’s 13 points on the night.

The Lady Spartans improved to 14-3 and 1-0 in league, while the Titans dropped to 7-9 and 0-1.
