(West Covina) – The Lady Huskies trailed 30-16 two minutes into the third quarter but went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to five. South Hills then rallied in the fourth to pull out a 49-47 win over West Covina Wednesday in San Antonio League action.

A pair of Elisabeth Kroneberger free throws followed by a Kristine Reyes bomb preserved a ten point advantage for the Lady Bulldogs heading into the fourth quarter.

South Hills rallied however with coast to coast post play by Melinda Gomez, who finished as the leading scorer with 21 points and 11 rebounds. She netted four buckets in the final frame, and teammate Jackie Valle-Acosta crashed the boards for 7 caroms and handed out 2 assists to help fuel the comeback.

Amber Del Real’s bucket tied the game for West Covina late in the contest but a pair of missed free throws hurt the Lady Bulldogs cause.

Valle-Acosta’s scored on a driving lay up for a 49-47 SH lead with 22.3 seconds to go and it proved to be the game winner. West Covina missed a floater with 11 seconds left and South Hills rebounded, but a traveling call several tics later gave WC possession with 3 tics on the clock.

But South Hills snatched the ball away to preserve the comeback victory and a perfect start to San Antonio league play.

West Covina hosts Walnut Friday while South Hills travels to Nogales. Both games tip off at 4:45 pm.
