Baldwin Park 79, Flintridge Prep 71

Flintridge Prep’s frantic 16-0 rally in a 28 point fourth quarter came too late as Baldwin Park built enough breathing room in the preceding periods to ward off the Rebels, 79-71.

Tomas Montes drilled another four from downtown, leading BP and all scorers with 21 points. Montes improved to 51.1% overall from three point land as he bumped his season total up to 68 (on 133 attempts). The Braves’ board crashing tandem of Fernie Morelos and Joey De La Torre went on with business as usual. De La Torre had 17 points and 11 caroms, while Morelos tossed in 15 and pulled in 17 rebounds to go along with 2 assists, a steal, and a block. Gus Vasquez was the fourth Brave in double figures scoring with 12.

The Rebels also had four players reach twin figures as well. Kenyatta Smith checked in with 20 and 14 boards, 3 blocked shots. Kory Hamane added 17 with 9 rebounds. Jonathan Woo accounted for 14, and Nick Ostiller scored 10 plus 9 rebounds and had a pair of steals.

The Wildcats’ 7 foot, 265 pound junior postman Kyle Caudill, who is averaging 17.5 points and 12.1 rebounds per game, caused the Spartans fits for three quarters as he put his size advantage to work. Caudill totaled 20 points and 10 caroms in this game. Adam Williams got all of his 9 on three long range bombs behind the arc in the second half.

Trey-happy Spartan sharpshooter Jeff Grigg accounted for a dozen of his team high 16 points on four 3-pointers while also scooping up 4 steals. Mason Holle scored 14, and LC points leader Mike McGlashan (251 pts, 13.9 PPG) dropped in 12, adding a trio of assists and three thefts.

Murrieta Valley 52, Diamond Ranch 40

Murrieta Valley went on a 20-3 third quarter run and went on to win its 17th consecutive game with a 52-40 defeat of Diamond Ranch. The Nighthawks, now 19-1, have beaten every opponent they’ve played so far. The lone hiccup, a 56-60 loss to Rancho Verde on 12/3 in the Big Daddy Citrus Hill tournament, was avenged 26 days later on 12/29 with a 45-40 victory at the Paloma Valley Shootout.

The Panthers opened the second quarter with a 13-1 surge to take a 19-16 lead, only to relinquish it to the Nighthawks for good as they managed a deuce against a 9-2 run the remainder of the half. The drought lasted almost 11 minutes stretching well into the third frame.

Justin Gudger’s 18 points piloted Murrieta Valley’s offense along with nine each from Jackson Helms and the aptly named Austin Quick, who dished out three assists.

Malcolm Green was the lone Diamond Ranch player in double figures with 13 points. Michael Swanegan (son of PCC head coach Mike Swanegan) hit consecutive treys 59 tics apart in the second before capping his nine point day with three free throws in the fourth. Pete Nolopp (7 rebounds) buried 4 of 5 from the floor including a 3 point play.

The Mustangs, who were without injured players Chibuzo Okoro and Aubrey Coleman out, were in the driver’s seat for most of the game. They clung to a 45-44 advantage into the fourth as Glendora battled back. Christian Chen came off the bench and splashed a trey 57 seconds into overtime giving Walnut a 58-57 Walnut lead. But that soon evaporated as the team managed only a free throw the rest of the way and the Tartans went on a 5-1 closeout. Walnut missed a desperation 30 footer as the clock buzzed.

Leonard Rhodes paced Walnut going 8 for 12 down low towards a team high 18 points. He also grabbed 9 rebounds and swatted down two shots. Brian Gholar helped Walnut with a pair of clutch threes and finished with 16 points. Zach Galman (12 points) broke the Mustangs out of the gate by making 4 of his first 5 buckets for 10 in the first half. Cameron Lew dished out 3 assists.
