1. The San Francisco Giants are 9-21 since the All-Star break and have fallen 1.5 games behind the Dodgers.

2. Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling is considering running against Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren in 2018.

3. Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt wins the 200 meter semi final but Justin Gatlin of the United States fails to qualify for the Final.

4. The U.S. Men’s basketball team routs Argentina 105-78 to advance to the semi finals in Rio Games.

5. Former Del Rio League rival coaches Vinnie Lopez (El Rancho) and Margarito Beltran (La Serna) will face off Friday night when Lopez’ Pacifica team travels to Bell Gardens for a scrimmage.

6. “Gabrielino!” – MVS Commenter “Anonymous” on the “50 Area Coverage Teams” story.

7. The Lakers are set to sign China star Yi Jianlian to a one-year, $8 million deal. Jianlian, a seven footer, was a sixth round pick of the Milwaukee Bucks in 2007 and has spent the last four seasons playing in China.

9. On this day in 1951 3’7″ St. Louis Browns pinch hitter Eddie Gaedel becomes the smallest man ever to appear in a Major League baseball game. Detroit Tiger pitcher Bob Cain walked him on four straight pitches. Two days later the American League banned owner Bill Veeck from ever using Gaedel again calling him a “promotional attraction”.
