Joe T…. “And they’re dancing in the streets of Flushing! Mets win! Mets win!”

By Joe Torosian

“We’ll see the sun come up on sunday mornin’
And watch it fade the moon away
I guess you know I’m givin’ you a warnin’
‘Cause me and moon are itchin’ to play…”—Starbuck

Kick it!

Right off the Top: Some people get a zit and they freak out…I get a zit, and I see an opportunity.

I guess South Pas is playing for keeps (51-0 over Gabrielino)…and wants its first Rio Hondo League title since 1977…

It’s always amazing when someone really cares about what you think or what you believe…I was asked—other than being a believing Christian (probably because they knew my response would be something akin to a coach saying; “we gotta protect the ball, minimize our mistakes, and play the way we’re capable of playing.”)— what motivated me when I wrote or talked about sports…or in just how I lived my life.

Flattering…Especially since my column doesn’t do as well as “The Peterson Principle.” …and my paycheck is considerably smaller that Fred Robledo’s…

My answer was/is this… I don’t want to look common…I don’t want to look like everybody else…It terrifies me…I can’t stand lines for theaters or amusement parks not because of the time it takes (bring a good book and that problem’s remedied) but because I have an issue with moving in one direction with a herd of people.

Concerts are a real problem for me…I like music, there are a lot of groups I like…but to be with a thousand or thousands of people jumping/singing/dancing scares me…I’m fearful (for me—I’m not condemning anyone else) as to why I’d be jumping/singing/dancing…I’m not against tattoos or body piercing for any reasons of faith, but they are so so common these days…I feel getting either, a tat or piercing causes a small loss of identity…

Bottom line is I see a lot of things as attempts to coax me into doing/thinking/believing a certain way…Efforts to assimilate me into one group…So my first instinct is to trust nobody…to disagree with anything and everything, no matter how wonderful something may be, until I can verify its truthfulness, I will always say no to it…Or say yes, if everyone else is saying no…

Groucho: I got something here you’re bound to love. You’ll be crazy about it.
Chico: I don’t like it.
Groucho: You haven’t even read it.
Chico: I don’t care. Whatever it is, I don’t like it.

Not saying it belonged to the South El Monte football program, but a drone hovered over the field for much of last night’s game between the Southmen and the Arroyo Knights.

***

MLB needs to make St. Louis Cardinals’ infielder Jedd Gyorko submit to a urinalysis test.

***

First Add Arcadia: The Apaches are now 5-0…The last time Arcadia started a season 5-0 was in 2007…They revved it all the way to 7-0…But lost three of their last four including a first round CIF defeat to Rancho Verde…

Joe T.'s High School football novel is available through Amazon.com “A literary snapshot of what goes on over the course of a high school football season…an awesome read and a story that truly will transcend time.”—Jim Singiser, AD/HC Arroyo Knights Football “Thrill, dread, anxiety, love, agony, success, and failure; basically all the emotions you feel as a football player/coach as you do in life, all wrapped up in a single book.”—Marc Paramo, HC Rosemead Panthers Football “I read the book and really enjoyed it a great deal. I would think coaches and parents could Learn a lot.”—John “Coach” Kentera, former sports talk host at Mighty 690 & Mighty 1090

“It’s unfortunate, people make choices, and there’s consequences for those choices. As a team, I’ve said since day one, if I drop dead of a heart attack at the 50 we’re not going to stop the game…We’re not, not gonna to play next week…It’s just kind of that next man up mentality…to beat Rowland, to beat Rosemead, and to come out and beat these guys says a lot about the character of the team.”—Arroyo HC, Jim “His Arroyo Baldness” Singiser after the Knights 38-14 victory over South El Monte last night.

Is there such a thing as too much college football?

***

Next Add Apaches: In 2002, Arcadia opened the season 5-0…and took it to 9-0 before losing two of its last three…Including a 43-22 loss to Antelope Valley.

***

Note to Dodger Fans: Is it World Series or bust…World Series champions or bust? …Or just happy to be there after being eight back of the Giants in July?

We know with Cubs fans its World Series title and nothing else…

As a Mets fan…? I can tell you, it is all gravy after the way this season has gone.

Forty years ago tonight (10/1/1976)…South Pasadena got a big game from Robbie Chapman in a 34-7 victory over Bell Gardens…in Temple City, Rosemead quarterback Tim McNutt scored on a 70-yard run on the game’s first play as the Panthers beat the Rams 14-0…Alhambra went to Gahr and scored a 21-14 victory thanks to the rushing of Tony Regaldo (29-115 yards, Td) and passing of Brian Apodoca (2 Td Passes; one to Dave Fife the other to Larry Kemp)…At Duarte, the Falcons rallied with two fourth quarter touchdowns to beat La Canada, 27-25. Keith Jackson scored on a 91-yard run (he also scored on an 80-yard touchdown run in the first half)…and quarterback Keith Gibson scored the game winner on a 1-yard run after fullback Greg Crawford’s 40-yard run set up a first and goal…Crescenta Valley defeated Hoover, 49-7, thanks to the play of future San Francisco 49er Tom Holmoe. Holmoe scored on a 92-yard kickoff return and on a 40-yard run…Since 1976 was a weird experimental year where the Mission Valley and Rio Hondo League meshed…San Marino defeated El Monte 40-16…

***

Third Add Apaches: In 1995, Arcadia began the season 5-0…and went to 7-0 before being knocked off by Muir, 43-27, in Week Eight…The Apaches finished the season 10-2 with a second round playoff loss to Peninsula, 43-8.

***

“Offering a flower…Oh, doesn’t that bring you back to the 60’s and the Flower Children? Oh, what you don’t remember the 60’s?…Okay…”—Vin Scully, Friday night at At&T Park on two men who ran onto the field to offer the players a flower. One was taken down by Giants’ outfielder Angel Pagan

***

The Apaches One More time: In 1994, Arcadia started 5-0…and went to 6-0 before losing to Muir, 27-14, in Week Seven. They advanced to the second round of the playoffs (beating Downey in the first round) where they fell to Peninsula, 17-0.

***

Really into this new group called “Blank State” and their single… “Harry, that Bastard!”

***

The entire Muir Mustangs football team took a knee during the National Anthem at Salter Stadium last night.

***

Last Add Apaches: In 1970, Arcadia completed a perfect 9-0 regular season (meaning they achieved a 5-0 start) but lost in the first round of the CIF playoffs to Bishop Amat, 35-20, at Citrus College. Starring for the Lancers that night was some guy named Pat Haden (18-24-269 yards, 4Tds) and a receiver named J.K. McKay ((3 TD catches; 14, 43, 64-yards).

I wonder whatever happened to those guys.

***

Speaking of 5-0 Starts: San Dimas is 5-0 for the first time since 2008 when they kicked off the season with an 8-0 record. They fell in Week Nine to Northview, 40-39. The Saints advanced to the second round of the playoffs before falling to Rosemead.

***

Really Last Add Apaches: In 196o, Arcadia won eight regular season games (confirmed) from Week Two thru Week Nine. On November 25th, the Apaches lost their first ever playoff game, 13-12, to Anaheim. It was dubbed “The Fog Game” and it was played in the OC at La Palma Stadium…What I don’t know is who Arcadia played in Week One of the 1960 season (September 23) and what the outcome was. The previous three seasons they played Santa Paula and in 1961 they played San Marino…I’m guessing they played Santa Paula, but I do not have a final score for this game.

…And yes, it is driving me crazy…So I’d appreciate a little help 0n this.

***

If the Cubs lose in the first round of the playoffs…could it be so traumatic that a “Cubs Season Matters” movement would start?

I’m a firm believer in All Seasons Matter…

Midbits (same as ‘Tidbits’)

Midbits: “I saw the targeting post…In Fanview…We actually got a TD called back Saturday. The ref said my running back targeted on a block. I just shook my head, I asked the kid, he said, “I hit him with my shoulder, and his head went back, that’s why he called it.”—San Gabriel Valley football coach.

Midbits: Really sick of hearing adult males use the expression, “yummy.” I don’t like it.

Midbits: Are you telling me UCLA has waited 40 years to induct Wendell Tyler into its Hall of Fame? That is terrible…

Midbits: I’ve always been a fan of Washington State running back, James “Boobie” Williams.

Midbits: “The UCLA football team just came out of Pauley Pavilion. Football players are humongous!”—Maddie Torosian in a text to her father…
