South El Monte…SEM Trench Mob…Something’s brewing in the swamp…under the radar and grinding away

South El Monte’s “Devil’s Herd” has now advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

(The Swamp)—How do you sum up what South El Monte did in its 38-23 first round win over visiting Rio Hondo Prep last night?

Don’t doubt the South because it is never a warm welcome at The Swamp.

The Southmen controlled the game from the start. Establishing its ground game with a 6-minute opening drive, which resulted in a 38-yard field goal by senior kicker Isias Acosta.

Quarterback Daniel Olmos added a pair of touchdowns. The first—a 16-yard touchdown run—came with 3:17 remaining in the first quarter. The second—a 16-yard pass to wide receiver Richard Nava—was added with 1:01 remaining in the game’s first half.

However, the Eagles top contributor of the evening was Sal Tovar, who ran for three touchdowns. Tovar finished the evening with 21 carries for 127 yards to go with the three scores.

Rio Hondo Prep’s scoring was provided by running back Stephen Santizo and wide receiver Martin Chang. Santizo, who rushed for 220 yards, posted a 50-yard scoring run, additionally caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Chang.

Chang also scored on a 5-yard “End- Around”.

Next week, the Eagles will travel to Santa Clarita to meet Santa Clarita Christian, who was victorious over the Sierra Vista Dons. The location and Kick-off time will be announced at a later date. Rio Hondo Prep finishes the 2016 football season with a record of 6-4, second in the Prep league.
