UFC 110: Cain KOs Big Nog

Cain Velasquez unloads on Nogueira

By George Hernandez

UFC 110 separated the contenders from the gatekeepers. Ben Rothwell had to pull out of his fight with Mirko “Cro Cop” because of a stomach illness and the Elvis Sinosic – Chris Haseman fight was pulled off the card after Sinosic was injured in warm ups but it was still a memorable night for UFC 110.

“Cro Cop” earns much needed win; Bader hands Jardine third straight loss

Cro Cop (26-7-2) took it to last minute replacement Anthony Perosh (10-6) all night. Perosh, who isn’t known for his striking, tried to take down Cro Cop but with no success. Cro Cop punished Perosh on their feet and on the ground. Cro Cop ended up opening a cut over the eye of Perosh late in the second round, and referee Herb Dean called time out. The fight continued but was eventually stopped before the third round because of the severity of the cut. Cro Cop improved his UFC record to a 3-3 and is looking to fight Rothwell next.

Ryan Bader (11-0) “TUF 8” winner, got his first real test in the UFC against veteran Keith Jardine (15-7-1). Jardine took it to Bader for most of the first two plus rounds. Jardine showed off his take down defense and started landing solid strikes. Bader caught Jardine with a right hand late in the third round and Jardine stumbled. Bader went for a knee and then a right but both missed. Bader did land a left hand that dropped Jardine hard. The referee was forced to stop the fight. Bader improved to 4-0 in the UFC and Jardine dropped to 6-6 in the UFC. It was Jardine’s third straight loss, and he’s 2-5 in his last seven. Don’t be surprised if Jardine gets his walking papers.

Silva gets decision win over Bisping

The fight started off strong for Michael Bisping (18-3) against former Pride champ Wanderlei Silva (33-10-1) in his first middleweight belt. Bisping landed solid punches in the first round and his kicks were keeping Silva off balance. Silva did finish out the first round with a flurry of punches. In the second round Silva started feeling his distance and was landing more punches and kicks. Silva was taken down late in the round but while locked in a guillotine choke, the bell rang. Both fighters went at it the third round with Silva landing with more power. Silva rocked and dropped Bisping just before the end of the fight. Silva took a unanimous decision victory and is in the middleweight title picture. Despite the loss, Bisping earned respect.

Velasquez finishes Nogueira in first

Cain Velasquez (8-0) put on a striking clinic for the two and a half minutes that the fight lasted. Velasquez came out mixing up his kicks and punches leaving Nogueira off balance. Nogueira was willing to stand with Velasquez but that was the wrong thing to do. Nogueira tried to land a left but Velasquez landed first with a combo that dropped Nogueira. Velasquez attacked with five hard punches on the ground and referee Herb Dean was forced to stop the fight only 2:20 in the first. Velasquez put himself on the top of the list for a shot at heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.
