(South El Monte) – Nevaeh Castruita threw six shut out innings allowing three hits and striking out five in South El Monte’s 10-0 victory over Heritage Thursday in the first round of the CIF Division 5 Playoffs.

The Lady Eagles took a 2-0 lead off a pair of singles by Joselyne Palencia and Castruita. After a single by Rachel Carrasco and a double by Cecilia Jurado, Castruita got her second RBI of the game with a single making it 3-0 after four innings.
South put two more on the board in the fifth when Chasity Martinez hit a double just missing a homerun, but next batter Danielle Ruiz didn’t miss as she hit a towering two-run homerun to give the Lady Eagles a 5-0 lead.
Castruita continued her dominance with a one, two, three top of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth South had three straight singles that put Jayda Reyes up who hit a deep shot good enough for a RBI sacrifice fly. Martinez and Alyssa Acosta came up with RBI singles that and gave Livah Rangal a chance to close the game out with a hit.
Rangal took an outside pitch to right field scoring two runs and stopping the game at 10-0. Carrasco went 3 for 3 with two runs and an RBI for the Lady Eagles. Heritage had an opportunity in the first inning to put runs on the board with two on and one out but Castruita shut them down. South El Monte advances to the second round of the Division 5 softball playoffs.

So proud of The Lady Eagles letting their talent shine. I miss coaching you young
Ladies, but you have clearly made your coach proud. Keep up the great work that you have been doing, just like you were taught hard work pays off so keep working hard. Remember also to be true as well. “Student Athlete,” so work on your school work first & foremost, then continue to play hard on that field. Miss you, love you, believe in you. Go all the way Lady Eagles!! Good job Bunt, Congrats in continuing to nurture their talent. Looking forward to seeing you play..

I think SEM softball sent more kids to D1 than any other school in that league.
