Pedroza Leads Vikes over Covina

Eddie Pedroza fired a complete game for Northview

(Covina) – Eddie Pedroza fired a complete game and belted a tie breaking home run in the sixth inning to lead Northview to a 7-5 win over Covina Friday in Valle Vista League action.

Pedroza took a few shots on the mound but never went down as he battled his way to the victory. He allowed eight hits and walked two but he was also victimized by two critical Viking errors.

The two errors came in the fifth inning when the Colts erased a 5-2 deficit to get even. Andrew Carillo and Richie Sepulveda reached on miscues and eventually scored on a two run double by Nick Hynes. Hynes then scored all the way from second when Noah Ingram beat out a slow roller to the right side.

Pedroza immediately put the Vikes back in front in the top of the sixth when he led off and hammered a pitch over the right field fence for a 6-5 lead that was never relinquished. Northview added one more in the inning when Bryan Urbina walked and advanced on a double by Damien Chico. He eventually was forced in when Tyler Grijalva was plunked by a pitch.

Covina loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh on base hits by Carillo and Ingram and a walk to Caesar Murillo, but Pedroza got James Comaroto on a deep fly ball to right to end it.

The Vikings threatened to put it away early when they got four runs in the first inning. Bobby Ramos walked, Pedroza was hit by a pitch and Urbina struck out. But the ball got away, the throw to first was wild and Ramos scored. Xavier Martinez then connected on a three run home run.

Hynes, who had four ribbies for the Colts on the day, rapped a two run single in the third to cut the lead to two. But Chico slammed a solo shot with two out in the fourth to put Northview back up by three at 5-2.

That set the stage for the Colts to battle back in the fifth before Northview finally put it away.

Pedroza struck out eight including the side in the fourth. Jason Martinez worked five and two-thirds for Covina before being relieved by Daniel Gallo who finished up. Martinez gave up just four hits but three of them were home runs. He also walked three and hit three batters.

Northview improved to a perfect 5-0 in the Valle Vista and 7-2-1 overall. Covina fell to 3-2 and 5-5 on the season.
