(Whittier) – Norwalk’s Alexis Love (15 points, 8 rebounds, 5 blocks, 2 assists) won MVP honors and led the East All Stars to a 68-65 win over the West in the 6th Annual Sargent’s Sporting Goods All-Star girl’s basketball game Saturday at Whittier College.

Also for the East Sonora’s Keisha Miles had eight points and 13 rebounds, and Loren Gurrola of Whittier had 15 points and four steals.

West opened with an 11-5 run but the East had the lead for most of the game after that taking a halftime lead of 35-32. Callie Rohrbacker of Whittier Christian tied the game up at 45-45 when she hit back to back three pointers with 10 minutes left.

La Mirada’s Gabriella James (5 points) and Taylor Bieser (2 points) played tough defense to slow down the West run.

But St. Paul’s Angela Van Sickel (16 points and West MVP) never let the East run away with the game.

The East had a six point lead with 17 seconds remaining in the game as the West hit a three pointer to make it 68-65. The West got the ball back in on a bounce pass but couldn’t get off a shot.

“It was a lot of fun for the coaches and these girls. We had a good time,” said Whittier Christian and East Coach Bill Crammer. “Miles did a nice job, Gurrola played tough and had nice move, and Love was just a stand out.”

Love, who will be playing at Loyola Marymount next season said, “It was fun but I wanted to win. We started off slow but made a second half run and I was real surprised to win the MVP.”
