Rosemead Hands San Gabriel Second Straight Loss: 26-7

by Rich Whittington

(San Gabriel) – Rosemead, 2-0, scored 20 unanswered points in the opening quarter and went on to beat host San Gabriel 26-7 Friday night.

This was, in no small part, due to the efforts of Sophomore Quarterback Ivan Ostry. Ostry, who only attempted two passes Friday evening, completed both attempts for touchdowns. The first, a 45 yard strike, was hauled in by Junior Wide Receiver Andres Talamantes. The second TD pass, a 10 yard score, was caught by fellow Sophomore David Padilla. In addition to the scoring passes, Ostry, who rushed for 114 yards on 6 carries, found the end zone on a 65 yard TD run. The Panther’s final score of the evening, a 7 yard TD blast, was provided by David Padilla. Padilla finished the evening with 124 yards on 31 attempts.

The Panthers also played well defensively, holding the Matadors scoreless for the first 3 ½ quarters of play. In addition to catching one of the Panther’s touchdown offerings, Andres Talamantes intercepted two passes from the San Gabriel Quarterback.

San Gabriel, who saw their record drop to 0-2, never really got on track. Penalties and incomplete passes stalled their progress. The Matadors did, however, avoid a shutout when Senior Running Back Dallas Ortega found the end zone on a 1 yard TD jaunt, with 5:39 remaining in the contest. The PAT was blocked, ending the Matador’s scoring for the evening at six points.

In week 3 action, the Panthers travel to La Puente to battle the Warriors. San Gabriel will take on the Marshall Eagles, at Pasadena High School. Both contests are scheduled for 8/31/18. Kickoff time for both games is 7:00PM.

Possibly the smallest player out on the playing field at the Rosemead v.s San Gabriel game, who lines up just behind the QB, had a remarkable game, literally carrying the rock for Rosemead every down it seemed and the much larger defensive team had the excruciating task of trying to stop this young man, i kept hearing the kids in the stands yelling ” Padilla”, “hey, David” , so as it seems once again David slays Goliath.
