The Peterson Principle 5/4/10

Aaron Murphee and Monrovia have jumped in front in the Rio Hondo

By Tim Peterson

There’s one more thing to take care of before the high school football season starts in earnest. Of course at the Mid Valley we like to say the football season never ends. And with the coaching carrousel that’s been taking place since the last game was played in December that saying has never rang more true.

Los Altos, Northvew, San Marino, San Gabriel, Alhambra, Pomona, Bassett, and oh yeah Temple City will all have new coaches when the season starts in September. And so far every one of the positions has been filled except oh yeah, Temple City.

Who would have thought that the Bassett job would be more attractive right now than TC? Apparently the Rams are down to two candidates but if what Torosian is reporting in Fanview Lite about no teaching position available is true, they’re back to zero candidates.

I said all of the coaching positions have been filled but can somebody please confirm? Is Anthony Rice the Head Coach at Pomona or not?

Anyway back to that one last thing. There’s still some baseball to be played. We have some good baseball here in the San Gabriel Valley. Just ask avid Mid Valley reader “Fight Fan” who says Bishop Amat is number one in the state.

That reminds me, I wonder how receiver Wallace Gonzalez will look this year for the Lancers? Sorry it’s just hard to let it go. Anyway back to the diamond.

There are still two weeks left in the regular season before the playoffs begin. Some of the league races are decided while others will go down to the wire. Fight Fan is right. Bishop Amat is the best team in the area. But South Hills, Northview, Arcadia and Glendora are pretty good too. Here’s how the leagues break down.

Mission Valley

Gabrielino is in first place at 8-3, one-half game ahead of South El Monte and Arroyo. The Eagles beat South last week to move into the top spot. If Gabrielino wins out the title is theirs but the Eagles still have Arroyo and Mt. View left, and both have beaten Gabrielino once already.

Rio Hondo

It’s a two team race between Monrovia (9-1) and Temple City (9-2). The Rams fell to La Canada last week allowing Monrovia to jump into first place. Monrovia and Temple City have a huge game at Temple City on May 6. Monrovia also has LC twice and San Marino. Temple City has San Marino, South Pasadena and La Canada sandwiched around the date with M-Town.

Pacific

Arcadia is undefeated through nine league games. The Apaches should run the table with only Burbank being a possible stumbling block on May 7. Crescenta Valley, Burbank and Burroughs are in position to grab the next three playoff spots.

Valle Vista

It’s been all Northview so far. The Vikings are a perfect 10-0 after beating Baldwin Park twice last week. San Dimas and Covina should finish second and third. The Vikes have two games left with each of them in the next two weeks.

Miramonte

Bonita split a pair with Diamond Ranch last week but at 8-2 still looks good for the league title. Charter Oak will take second but the Chargers are already done with Bonita.

San Antonio

South Hills is 6-0 with just three league games remaining. Walnut is a lock for second.

Montview

It’s La Puente’s league to lose. The Warriors are 9-1 with Sierra Vista (6-1) in second. LP has two games left with the Dons.

Del Rio

Cal is 9-2 and is two games up with four to play. The Condors still have two games left with both Santa Fe and La Serna who are tied for second.

Almont

Alhambra is two games up on second place Bell Gardens and Montebello and should coast to the title. The Moors slipped once two weeks ago but it won’t happen again.

Glendora is the best in the Sierra. The Tartans have a good shot at a CIF title.

Bishop Amat? Yeah the Lancers will win the Del Rey. The jury is still out on a championship.

That’s my principle.
