The Rosemead Rebel... Has produced some good football.

T-Minus-125 Days until “The Mid Valley Classic”

Good Morning!

I’m sick of hearing about LeBron’s elbow… When I was a kid “Hondo” (John Havlicek to those believing the NBA started with Michael Jordan)…played a playoff game with an injury to his right arm that essentially left it hanging by his side. Right-handed, Havlicek played, and played well, with his left hand.

Matt Fregoso running behind Sal Chavarin…no wonder Rosemead’s Matt Koffler is willing to take abuse from the local sportswriter… He’s got the talent to be grinning this fall. I’d be grinning too with Matt Eddy back at linebacker, and by everything we’ve heard quarterback Matt Macias has improved.

However, who replaces Greg Parham at wide receiver?

Mid Valley would like to send its best wishes to South El Monte boys basketball HC Robert Burgess…That dude’s alright.

Once a Rebel, always a Rebel

One of the best feeder progams in the Mid Valley area is the Rosemead Rebels. Check out their website at www.rosemeadrebels.com. They will be hosting sign ups at Rebel Field on Saturday, May 22.

Oakland releases JaMarcus Russell…I wonder if he’ll file for unemployment?

Jim Rice did when the Red Sox released him and this is California. The state that always finds away to spend money it doesn’t have.

Anthony Rice’s arrival has people feeling optimistic about Pomona football probably for the first time since the days of J.J. Flannigan. After a very succesful run at Colony (two titles) Rice takes over a talented but underachieving Red Devils program.

(Okay, that’s a bit of a hyperbole; there has been good football since Flannigan was there.)

Taj Teague (with several feelers from colleges as a safety) provides the home run capability from the backfield and is complemented by Jamal Overton and Sali Johnwell.

According to MaxPreps Johnwell is listed as a team captain from a year ago as was 6’6” 260-pound sophomore Jose Manzo. Manzo is just the start when you look at the size of the players returning along the line of scrimmage for Pomona; Freddy Romo (5‘8” 255), Parker Ross (6’4” 250), and Aaron Flores (6’1” 280).

Don’t know if all these guys are ball players, but if Rice (who has a history of getting players to the next level) can light the fires they would be devastating in the Valle Vista clearing paths for Teague.

Big “Ifs” in a league featuring San Dimas and Baldwin Park, especially in year one. The Red Devils did finish 6-4 last season, but the combined record of the six teams they beat was 9-51.

Not too good Chief…

Rice puts Pomona on track, but I wouldn’t make any post-season plans…Not yet anyway

Sorry, not much of an Iron Man guy… Robert Downey Jr. as a super hero is like trusting Milton Bradley to play a full season… Batting clean up.

Phil Jackson and I actually have something in common.

If you’ve got some dough to spare, remember the Baldwin Park alumni game/fundraiser at BP this coming Saturday morning.

Last Add Rosemead: If you’re gonna run double-tights “…And shove it down their throats!” you have to have some tight ends. Luis Diaz and Conrado Simpson are gone. There is size in Lupe Perez, Mike Sanchez, and Daniel Villalobos so we’ll see.

Stay thirsty my friends…
