[Irwindale] Rio Hondo Prep defeated the Northwood Timberwolves Friday night 41-22 in the first round of the Division 12 Southern Section Playoffs.
Sophomore Jonathan Guerrero led a ground attack with 169 yards and a touchdown on 22 attempts. Senior Alex Esquiaqui added 102 yards on 19 attempts scoring two touchdowns. Junior quarterback Jack Van Cleve completed three passes on eight attempts for 94 yards and a touchdown.
Northwood’s offense led by senior Jaden Piazza coughed up the ball on its first two drives. Piazza turned the ball over a total of four times (fumble and three interceptions) but completed 17 passes on 33 attempts for 337 yards and 3 touchdowns while also leading his team in rushing yards with 39. Junior Travis Arena was Piazza’s favorite target, hauling in 9 balls for 161 yards including a 70 yard touchdown reception.
Next up for Rio Hondo Prep (10-0) is Jurupa Hills in the quarterfinals CIF SS Division 12 playoffs.
